The Synaptic Cleft or Synapse




A neuron’s axon ends in many small swellings called
axon terminals.
At the axon terminal the neuron may meet dendrites
of another axon or an effector, like a muscle or
gland.
The space where neurons meet other neurons or
effectors is called the synapse.
There are presynaptic neurons and postsynaptic
neurons.



The axon terminal at a synapse contains tiny
vesicles filled with chemicals called
neurotransmitters.
If a nerve impulse takes place, vesicles fuse
and release the neurotransmitter.
A common neurotransmitter is acetylcholine.
Example





Nerve impulse moves to axon terminal
Acetylcholine released from vesicles into synapse
Acetylcholine opens Na+ pumps in new neuron and
depolarization takes place.
Cholinesterase is released to destroy acetylcholine
(implemented without cholinesterase the neuron
would stay depolarized)
Lack of acetylcholine allows repolarization to take
place.
