Candy Neurons
With a partner, you will be constructing a neuron. All of the following parts must be included
in your neuron:
Part of the Neuron
1. Axon AND Axon Terminals
2. Myelin Sheath
3. Nucleus
4. Dendrites
5. Cell body (Soma)
6. Neurotransmitters
Possible Candy
Pull and Peel Twizzlers
Mini Marshmallows
Mini Chewy Sweet Tarts
Sour Neon Worms
Gummy Life Saver
Nerds
Draw a picture of the neuron (with direction of a
signal indicated) below:
(must have candy neuron checked by me BEFORE DRAWING)
The Nervous System: The Basic Structure
Directions: Read pg. 155-159 and respond to the following questions.
1. What are the two sub-systems the nervous system is divided into? And what parts of the body do they
include?
2. Define the following to understand the basic structure of the nervous system: (USE Figure 6.2 FOR CLEARER
UNDERSTANDING)
a. Neuron—
b. What are each of the basic parts of a neuron and what is their role and/or how are they related to each
other? (Hint: THERE ARE EIGHT (8) TO EXPLAIN)
3. What are the two parts of the system responsible for voluntary and involuntary activities? Provide an
example activity for each.
