WHS AP Psychology Candy Neuron Activity
Materials
 Pull apart twizzlers (These can be used to make dendrites, axons, and myelin
sheaths, and terminal buttons)
 York Peppermint Patties (These can be used to make the cell body)
 Pixie sticks (These make great neurotransmitters
Procedures
 Lay out candy ahead of time along with computer paper to allow for a semi-clean
surface. We all know that high school desks never really get washed.
 Students work in pairs of two to create their candy neurons. They must be labeled
and contain all key parts.
 Once they are done they must link of their diagram with another two groups.
 When you have a group of 6 come by for some direct instruction showing that
neurons fire DAT way. Dendrites to Axon to the Terminal Buttons!
 Teach about the myelin sheath at this time. Talk about how it speeds up the
neural signal.
 Once this electrical signal hits the terminal buttons blow the pixie dust
neurotransmitters to the dendrites of the next neuron. The students must then
send the chemical signal down to the adjoining neuron.
