The Nervous System
• Function – to coordinate and control
body’s activities = regulation.
• Allows body to respond to stimuli
• Structures
• 1. Central Nervous System:
• - brain
• - spinal cord
• 2. Peripheral Nervous System
- nerves leading away from cns
Nerve Cells - Neurons
• 3 types of neurons:
– 1. Sensory – carry impulses from
sense organs to brain and spinal cord
•
2. Motor – carry impulses from
brain and spinal cord to muscles and
glands
• 3. Interneurons – connect sensory
and motor neurons

Effects of Drugs on the Nervous System
• Stimulants – increase the release of
some neurotransmitters in the brain.
• - afterwards there is a lack of
neurotransmitters and feeling of
depression
• Antidepressants – some work by
blocking neurotransmitter receptors
so the signal will not be transmitted.
