SHEEP BRAIN A sheep’s brain is just like a human brain, but smaller. A child’s brain would be 2-3x this size. We also have a human brain in a jar. Around the brain is the DURA MATER. You can see the GYRI and the SULCI on the CEREBRUM. Here’s the BRAINSTEM. Here are the OLFACTORY BULBS with the OLFACTORY NERVES CNI. Here is CNV, the TRIGEMINAL NERVE. Here are the OPTIC NERVES, CN II. 1 Where the nerves cross is the OPTIC CHIASM. This is the PITUITARY, divided into two parts: ADENOHYPOPHYSIS and NEUROHYPOPHYSIS. Snip the dura mater underneath, cut it on top and peel it off. SUPERIOR SAGITTAL and TRANSVERSE SINUSES 2 This is the ARACHNOID MATER, DURA MATER, SUPERIOR SAGITTAL SINUS. The blood vessels are SUBARACHNOID VESSELS Separate out the two cerebral hemispheres at the fissure. Here’s the CEREBELLUM There are four structures: CORPORA (“bodies”) QUADGEMINI (“Gemini = twins”). They are part of the thalamus, and receive information from the eyes and ears. 3 Next, make a mid-sagittal section by following the longitudinal fissure. Note the cerebellum and the grey and white matter. The white matter is myelinated axons. This is the ARBOR VITA (“Tree of Life”). SAME PHOTO The BRAIN STEM with the MEDULLA and PONS. These are tracts: the CORPUS CALLOSUM connects the left and right cerebral hemispheres so your right hand knows what the left hand is doing. The FORNIX (part of the limbic system) is another tract down to the MAMMILARY BODY. Fornix (“arch”). Fornicates means to go to the arch under the Colleseum, where the prostitutes hang out. 4 This is the LATERAL VENTRICLE. PINEAL GLAND THALAMUS, HYPOTHALAMUS, The line here divides the PITUITARY into its two parts NEUROHYPOPHYSIS and ADENOHYPOPHYSIS . CORPORA QUADRAGEMINI OPTIC CHIASM 5 THIRD VENTRICLE, from here… …. to here Third ventricle connects by a tube into the FOURTH VENTRICLE. SUBARACHNOID SPACE or CENTRAL CANAL. 6 Get another brain and do a cross section. Cut through the pituitary. See the grey and white matter CORPUS CALLOSUM connecting the right and left hemisphere. FORNIX. The gooey stuff in the ventricles is the CHOROID PLEXUS, makes CSF. LATERAL VENTRICLES THIRD VENTRICLE THALAMUS, except for this small region is the HYPOTHALAMUS. JUGULAR VEIN, where all the sinus drain into. The vein has some blood here. 7
