Cell Analogy Project Given: Jan. 27th Due: Week of Feb. 9-13 Worth: 150 points What is a Cell Analogy? Cell analogy is nothing more than a person making a comparison of an object or organization to that of a cell. Each part of that object or organization has parts or departments that function into a similar capacity as that of the cell’s structure. For example: One may compare the “Starship Enterprise” from the Star Trek television shows to a cell. One may say that the ‘dilithium crystals’ that power the ship is like the mitochondria, which is the ‘powerhouse’ of the cell. What object or organization could I use to compare to a cell? A person can use any objects that have moving parts or components that causes the object to function (such as a car, computer, television). A person can use an organization (such as a sports team, corporation, factory). A person can use a city, state, or country’s government structure. What is needed for the project? 1. The project can be done individually or as a group of two or three (no more). 2. The project requires a poster (no tri-fold poster board). a. On the poster should be a picture of the cell next to a picture of the object (if doing this one). If you’re doing an organization, you need a picture of the organization. For a city, state, or country, a map of the place. b. Poster must be colorful with big letters that are clear and legible. 3. A report detailing the analogy. Report should be typed with double space detailing how the structures of the cell compare to that object, organization or government structure. What’s the purpose of this project? To give students a different means of understanding a cell and how each structure of the cell functions to keep the cell healthy and viable. What are the Structures of Cells and their function? Find the definitions for the following structures (it will help in understanding their function): Cell membrane Cell Wall Nucleolus Chloroplast Lysosomes Ribosomes Cytoplasm Mitochondrion Endoplasmic reticulum Nuclear Membrane Golgi Apparatus Nucleus
