Cell Analogies Poster Project – BIO II
Purpose: For this project you will be challenged to make 15 original and
appropriate functional analogies between cell structures and everyday objects.
What is an analogy? “A comparison between two things which are similar in
some respects, but otherwise are different. An explaining of something by
comparing it point by point with something else.” – Webster’s Dictionary
Example: The Nucleus is like a brain because it controls and
coordinates the activities of the whole cell in the same way the brain
controls and coordinates activities of the body.
YOU CANNOT USE THIS ANALOGY ON YOUR POSTER! BE ORIGINAL!
Procedure:
1. Draw a Plant and an Animal Cell on a sheet of poster paper. Use textbooks,
notes supplements or other sources as a guide.
2. Include and label at least 15 of the following organelles:
Cell or Plasma Membrane
Cell Wall
Cytoplasm
Chloroplast
Nucleus
Nucleolus
Ribosome
Golgi Body
Lysosome
Peroxisome
Mitochondria
Cytoskeleton
Cell Junctions
Cilia or Flagella
Basal Body
Membrane Proteins
Microtubule
Vesicle
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Vacuole
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Centriole
3. Write down the function (main job) of each organelle that you have labeled.
4. Write an analogy for each of your 15 labeled cell organelles. Write your
analogy so that it shows the comparison between the cell part and an
everyday object. BE SURE TO EXPLAIN THE REASONING BEHIND YOUR
ANALOGIES! Find a magazine or newspaper picture representing your
analogy and paste it on to your poster.
5. Complete the review sheet for the quiz on Cells and Organelles. Any
additional information covered on the review sheet that you feel is important
to your understanding of cells may also go on your poster.
6. You will be able to use your poster on the quiz on Cells and Organelles.
Total Points: 100 pts. (60 pts. Poster; 40 pts. Quiz)
