Project: Cell Analogies Collage
Often, it's easier to understand something if you compare it to another situation. When
you do this you are making an analogy. For example, "Life is like a bowl of cherries, it can
be very sweet but then there are the pits!"
Introduction: In this project, you will create a poster comparing the functions of cell
organelles to everyday situations or objects.
Procedure:
 Decide whether you will focus your project on a plant cell or animal cell.
 Choose 10 organelles from the list below. The organelles you choose will be the organelles you will
write analogies for.

Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
Nucleolus
Chromatin (DNA)
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Ribosomes
Golgi body

Vesicle
Vacuole
Mitochondria
Lysosome
Cell wall
Chloroplast
 Next, obtain a piece of poster board (any size you prefer) and draw your plant or animal cell in the
center. Add color neatly and carefully.
 Use magazines, newspapers, or the internet to cut out pictures of everyday items or activities
which have similar functions to the organelles you chose above. Try not to use all the same
analogies we have made in class. Come up with some new & original ones. Remember, the more
creative you are, the better your poster and the more you will learn!!!
 Type an analogy to show the similarity between the organelle and the picture you have chosen. Be
sure to clearly and completely explain the reasoning behind the analogy. Use the example below as
a guide for how you should write your analogies.
Nucleus: The nucleus of a cell is like the brain of a body, because just like the brain controls and
coordinates the activities of the body, the nucleus controls and coordinates all the activities of
the cell.
 Paste the pictures you have chosen around the perimeter of the poster.
 Near each picture, paste your neatly typed analogies.
 Connect the pictures to the appropriate cell organelle on your drawing using a straight line/arrow.
