Cell Organelles and Functions – Analogy Project
Part 1: Use pages 64-65 of the book to help you identify the organelle that performs each function. Label each organelle on the
model. Note, the model below is a plant cell. Plant and animal cells are very similar with the exception of
the ____________________, which is much larger to store _____________, ____________________ and
______________ and the _______________________________, which help plants complete photosynthesis in order to
make their own food.
Plants also have a ____________________________ __________________________
because______________________________________________________________________________________.
Organelle
Function
Directs cell activity, contains DNA for cell
reproduction
Barrier between the cytoplasm and the environment
outside the cell. In a plant cell, it is inside the cell
wall.
Cell’s energy is produced here
The gel-like fluid around the organelles
A stiff wall surrounding the membrane giving a rigid
shape
Used to store water, waste, food, and other
materials
Contain chemicals that break down food and worn
out parts
Receives materials from the endoplasmic reticulum
to send to other parts of the cell or outside the cell
Small structures to produce protein.
Network of passageways to carry material from one
part of the cell to another.
CELL MODEL (label)
Part 2: Think of something you can compare a cell to. Think of your favorite hobbies, foods, places, etc. Your teacher will show
you a “City” analogy and one more to help you think.
A Cell is like a ___________________________________________
Part 3: Create a poster or model of your “Analogy Cell.” See the rubric below for criteria:

Drawing/
Model does
not display
understanding
of organelle
functions or
purpose.
Drawing/model shows
limited understanding of
organelle function or
purpose. Many are
missing or unclear.
Drawing/model shows some
understanding of organelle
function or purpose. 1-3
may be missing or unclear.
Some analogies made.
3
Drawing/model shows understanding that all 10
organelles serve a particular function within the cell,
and can make an analogy that compares these
parts/functions with an unrelated concept.
Example: “City hall is like a nucleus, where
instructions come from to direct all the
functions/activities.”
Project is neat/professional/creative, using 5 or more
colors.
Use the table below to brainstorm your information. This information MUST be on your poster/model! Projects
