3.3.10.B – Describe and explain the chemical and structural basis of living organisms
Cell Model/Cell Analogies Project- (Sections 7.2)
Essential Question(s): How does the structure of the cell enable it to perform the
properties of life?
OBJECTIVE: During this project, you will make original and appropriate functional
analogies between cell organelles and everyday objects, people, places, jobs, etc.
Analogy – A comparison between two things, which are similar in some respects, but
are otherwise different; an explanation of something by comparing it point by point with
something else.
For example:
Functional Analogy – The nucleus is like the brain of the cell because it controls all
the functions of the organelles, just as your brain controls all the functions in your body.
In order to complete the project, you will:
1. Make a model of a cell using clip art/pictures objects to represent the
functions of the 12 organelles listed below. Be sure to place them in the
proper location in/around the cell. Your cell model should be generated
using Microsoft Word – no other forms of submission will be accepted.
2. Using a spreadsheet, already created in Microsoft Word and available on
the class website, create a table of functional analogies, complete with
images of the objects in the model. This table should act as a key/legend
for the model. As part of completing the key, you will also:
a. Explain the reasoning behind your choice of object to represent the
organelle. Please write them in the format above.
b. Indicate on the table/key whether the organelle belongs in a plant
cell, animal cell or both AND which property of life the organelle
helps to accomplish.
3. At the conclusion of the project, you will submit the model and table/key
for grading purposes. The grading criteria are on the back of this sheet.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. The following structures must be included in your project:
1. Cell membrane
