Mr. Blacher Biology Cell Analogy Project-Cereal Box Due Friday November 8 This project will help to develop your understanding of the relationship between the cell’s structure and its function. You will be creating analogies for each of the organelles within the cell. You will also design and construct a cereal box display. This will illustrate the organelles of a typical animal and plant cell and it will include a brief summary of a current research topic. Hopefully this project will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of cells, and express your creativity. This project is also environmentally and economically friendly! There’s nothing to purchase and virtually no waste other than a cereal box, which you likely already have! Here’s what to do: 1. Find yourself a cereal box (15 oz or larger). 2. Large Panel #1: Marketing! A Cell Biology-related name for your cereal, a creative slogan, and a mascot. Illustrate this side…make it eye-catching and colorful! 3. Large Panel #2: Separate Animal and Plant Cell Diagrams with organelles numbered (10 for animal cell 12 for plant cell…see list). 4. Side Panel # 1: Key for Animal Cell Diagram 5. Side Panel # 2: Key for Plant Cell Diagram 6. Bottom Panel: One typed paragraph summarizing a current cytology (cell biology) research topic with source(s) cited. 7. Top Panel: Labeled Diagram of Bacterial Cell, Name, & Class Color 8. Twelve (12) Analogies: Type your analogies on an 8.5” x11” sheet of paper (standard printer paper), and be sure that your name and class color are included on this paper as well. All of your analogies should relate to one common theme (example: the various parts of a city, various players on a team, etc., an office, a school…whatever you want). Each analogy should have the name of the organelle and the analogous object underlined. It should also explain the relationship between the two objects (functionally and/or structurally). This paper will go inside of the box. There are THREE PARTS to a complete analogy. Here’s an example of what I mean: Part 1:The cell wall of a plant cell is like a brick wall of a house because both of them provide support and protection. Part 2: The cell wall gives the plant cell structure and keeps out unwanted substances. Part 3: The brick wall of house also keeps things out (like wind, rain, and people that aren’t invited) while enabling the house to stand up. Organelle List: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
