+ Intro To Cells: Table + What are Cells?! Cells are the basic units of structure and function of all living things! Cells contain Organelles or parts! (Little Organs!) + Plant Cells Generally LARGE Cell SQUARE-ISH SHAPED vacuole wall Chloroplasts + Animal Cells Generally, ROUND-ISH Multiple, small SHAPED! vacuoles NO cell wall NO chloroplasts Organelle Name Function CELL MEMBRANE Supports and Lipid BI-LAYER protects all (2 layers of fat) cells. Regulates what enters and leaves the cell. Like the skin around your body! NUCLEUS The control or information center of the cell. Round, usually found near the center of the cell. Contains DNA!!! (genetic material) BRAIN OR BOSS BOTH CYTOPLASM Gives the cell support and shape. Cell without would be like a shriveled up raisin! Thick, jelly-like substance that fills in the area between organelles. Like the liquid in soup. The veggies are like the organelles. OR Jello with fruit in it! + Description Analogy or Comparison Plant, Animal, or Both BOTH BOTH Organelle Name Description Analogy or Comparison Mitochondria Breaks down food molecules and releases energy Bean shaped organelle filled with folded membranes. Cell’s BOTH POWERHOUSE Cell Wall Protects and provides structure Thicker membrane that lies outside the cell membrane. Very rigid! Like cartilage in ears and nose PLANT Chloroplast Traps energy from sunlight to make food (glucose) for the cell. PHOTOSYNTHESIS Green, contains chlorophyll (pigment). Long, stacked oval shapes. Solar oven (uses energy to make food) PLANT Vacuole Stores food, water, and WASTE Fluid filled sacs. Very LARGE in plants. Many little ones in animals. Warehouse, ALWAYS water tank, or PLANT, garbage dump. SOMETIME -S ANIMAL + Function Plant, Animal, or Both
