Objective: To make functional analogies between cell organelles and everyday objects.
Definition: Analogy – A comparison of two things which are similar in some respects, but
otherwise are different. (An explanation of something by comparing it point by point with
something else).
Procedure: Choice 1—Create a themed cell poster project (ie. a castle or a store)
1. On a half sheet of poster board (12” by 18”) DRAW a plant or animal cell in the middle.
The cell needs to be no bigger than 5” by 6” or so. This will give you plenty of room for
your analogies. The cell needs to be colored and extremely neat.
Cell parts to be included:
Cell membrane
Vacuole
Cytoplasm
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Nucleus
Cell Wall (plant only)
Ribosomes
Chloroplasts (plant only)
Mitochondria
Golgi Bodies
Lysosomes
Nucleolus
Nuclear Membrane
Cytoskeleton
2. Identify as either a plant or animal cell. You must have a title.
3. Find the function of the cell organelles.
4. Find a magazine or internet picture (NO CLIP ART) of an everyday object which has a
similar function or use as each cell structure.
5. Write an analogy to show how the cell part and the object are similar. Be sure to explain
the reasoning behind the analogy. Use the following format: The nucleus is like a CEO
because it controls and coordinates the activities of the whole cell in the same way the
CEO controls and coordinates the activities of his company. (Do not use this analogy.)
Here is another example:
The cell wall of a plant cell is like a brick wall of a house because both of them provide
support and protection. The cell wall gives the plant cell structure and keeps unwanted
substances and objects out as well. The brick wall of house also keeps things out (like wind,
rain, and people that aren’t invited) while enabling the house to stand up. (Do not use this
analogy.)
6. Paste the pictures around the edges of the paper.
7. Label the pictures with your TYPED analogies and draw a straight line to the correct cell
part. (Straight line must be in pen).PLAN AHEAD!!!
