Cell Analogies Collage
“It takes three million cells to cover the head of a pin, but only one cell collage to cover a large part
of your Biology grade!”
1. Select a plant or animal cell as the subject for your collage. Be certain to include the following
structures:
Cell Wall
Cytoplasm
Chloroplast
Chromatin
Nucleus
Nucleolus
Rough ER
Cell Membrane
Nuclear Envelope
Golgi Apparatus
Lysosome
Ribosome
Vacuole
Smooth ER
Mitochondria
(**Please note: you are ultimately responsible for all parts of the cell; if you choose to do an
animal cell, you will include plant cell parts on the back or to the side, separate from the
overall collage, and vice versa for a plant cell..)
2. Correctly identify your cell as a plant or animal cell. On the back of your poster, answer the following
questions:
(a) Identify your cell as a prokaryote or a eukaryote. How can you tell?
(b) Identify your “center cell” as a plant cell or an animal cell. What observations or
evidence help you to classify it?
3. Review the function and structure of each item on the list above.
4. Select a theme for the analogies you will be creating. It should be a broad topic that you know a lot
about. Ideally, it should have a lot of “parts” such as “Cell as a City” or “Cell as a Factory” (you may
NOT use either of these examples) Then, using clip art, magazines, newspapers, or high quality
drawings, find everyday objects related to your analogy that have a similar function or structure as the
parts of your cells.
5. Type an analogy to show the similarity between your cell part and the everyday object. How should a
cell part analogy be constructed? It should include a clear explanation of BOTH the part function
and how it relates to the function of your analogy. For example, “The nucleus is like a brain
because it controls and coordinates the activities of the entire cell; in the same way the brain
controls and coordinates the activities of the body.”)
Possible Bonus Part: Complete an analogy for the cytoskeleton (microfilaments/microtubule)
6. You will include your analogy with your pictures in the collage.
7. Color-code your cell picture (provided by instructor or hand-drawn) and paste in the middle of your
collage poster board.
8. Paste the everyday objects at the edges of the paper. Label the pictures with your typed analogies and
make a pointer to the correct structure in your cell drawing.
9. You will be graded on the quality/strength of your analogies and their explanations, creativity, neatness,
and completeness of your project.
