Introduction Cells need to carry on the same basic functions as we do to sustain life; the difference is cells do this with much smaller parts. These smaller structures that allow the cell to function are called organelles – “tiny organs.” Also plant and animal cells have some similar parts and some parts that are not similar. It’s only common sense that if you are able to relate things you learned in class to everyday things, you’ll remember it better. It’s not everyday that you and your friends sit discussing the rough endoplasmic reticulum. However, you probably do discuss things like cars, your homes, places to visit, etc… Therefore, your task in this assignment is to relate the different cell organelles to an everyday situation or thing using an analogy. Task: An analogy is a comparison that draws attention to the similarity of two or more basically different things. You are going to choose something that represents the cell and its organelles, and explain why each organelle is symbolized that way. An example of a cell analogy is a city. Parts of the city represent organelles inside the cell. The task is to come up with your own analogy of a cell, such as a school, an office, a recording studio, etc. You are limited only by your own imagination. PROCEDURE: 1. Draw, illustrate, or create your analogy and label the parts. Make sure that inside your analogy each object represents a different organelle of a cell. Use the following organelles: Vacuoles, ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus, lysosomes, cell membrane, mitochondria, cytoplasm, golgi body 1. Go back and next to the parts in your analogy, write the name of the organelle that it represents. 2. On a separate sheet of paper make a chart that explains how each part of the analogy represents each organelle of the cell. Here is one way you could make the chart: The nucleus of the cell is like the _____ of the city because________. 3. Turn this sheet in with your final product! Cell Analogy Rubric Due 12/1/09 Name: _________________________ Class Period: ______________ Cell City projects will be assessed using the following criteria. 5.5=Exceeds Standard; 5=Meets Standard; 4=Does not meet standard; 0=Item not present in project 5.5 5 4 0 A. Scientific Accuracy 1. Visual representations of all the required organelles are present & labeled with the cell part’s name in diagram. 2. Graphic organizer: Function of all required organelles is correctly explained in graphic organizer. 3. Graphic organizer + project: Cell analogies are accurate and/or appropriate. B.The Project - Creativity, Originality, Artistic Merit 4. Use of materials and construction demonstrate originality. 5. The project is colorful, neat and labels are legible. C. Organization 6. The student’s name and class period are clearly labeled on all project components. Project components were turned in on time. Final Score: I earned project. points out of a possible 33 points on this
