The Nervous System Alligator’s medulla oblongata Central Nervous System Two Parts: • Brain • Spinal Cord The Brain Cerebrum Planning Sensations Spatial Judgements Reasoning Emotion Social Skills Vision Understanding Learning Memory Cerebellum Organizing Info Balance and muscle coordination Brain Stem Involuntary actions The Spinal Cord • Controls reflexes Peripheral Nervous System • All nerves outside of brain and spinal cord • 31 pairs of nerves branch off the spinal cord Neurons • Basic unit (cell) of the Nervous System • Carry messages in the form of electrical impulses Synapse • Synapse: The space between the neurons where the electrical impulse (message) is passed Messages jump across Drugs and the synapse alcohol disrupts like the an electrical communication current between neurons * An automatic reaction that happens without thinking about it. * A reflex happens quickly in less than a second. When a reflex impulse occurs, the reaction happens very quickly. This is because the impulse does not go all the way to the brain. It travels from the site where the stimulus occurs, To the spinal cord, And then back to the site of stimulus, so a reaction can take place. When a voluntary impulse occurs, you have conscious control over your movement. This involves the brain. It travels from the site, To the spinal cord, To the brain, Back to the spinal cord, Then to the muscle you want to move. You have a nerve along your whole arm. The “funny bone” is the only place on the arm where the nerve is not protected. The “funny bone” is on the elbow. “Fight or Flight” In extreme situations people have been known to take on super-human abilities. This is the work of your Nervous and Endocrine system (glands and hormones) working together. You have adrenal glands on top of your kidneysthat release adrenaline when the brain tells it to do so.
