The Nervous System of the Human Body by: Simon, Ayanna, Justin, and Abby Key Parts ● One key part of the nervous system is the brain. ○ It sends and receives messages. ● Another is the spinal cord. ○ The spinal cord is like the highway it moves messages across the body. ● Nerves are like the the smaller roads. ● Neurons are cells inside the nerves. ● Ganglia outside CNS it is the place that controls your reflexes. Vocabulary to Know Some vocabulary you should know: ● Neurons (the cells that make up the nervous system, carry electric signals to each other) ○ Dendrites (receive signals from another neuron’s…) ○ Axon (sends signals to other neurons dendrites) ● Brain (the control center where electronic signals originate) ● Spinal Cord (inside of your backbone. Takes messages directly from the brain and then sends them throughout the body.) System Purpose ● Brainpop video 2:21 ● The nervous system helps all the parts of the body to communicate with each other. The brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The other nerves of the body are called the peripheral nervous system. Keeping your system up to date ● Keeping your nervous system up to date is easy just follow these 5 steps. 1. Exercise daily (can help some nerves that don't get used) 2. Dont smoke or use tobacco products (nicotine act as a central nervous system stimulant) 3. Take care of health conditions that may cause stress to the Nervous system 4. Eat a balanced diet 5. Get plenty of fluids For more steps go to http://www.webmd. com/brain/tc/nervous-system-problems-prevention Ailments ● ● Cerebral Palsy ○ Lack of balance ○ Impaired speech Multiple Sclerosis ○ Myelin sheaths covering the axons of the neurons in the brain and spinal cord are damaged Parkinson’s Disease ○ Associated with aging ○ A tremor ■ It spreads with age ________________________________________ ● ● ● Encephalitis ○ Virus in the brain ■ Causes inflammation ○ Symptoms include ■ Headache ■ Fever ■ Speech and Memory loss ● Treated with antiviral drugs Bell’s Palsy ○ A form of Neuritis ○ Paralysis of the facial muscles System Specialist ● Neurologist is the system specialist. ○ These people do surgery on the brain and spinal cord. ○ Neurologist also study the nervous system. ○ You have to go to college for 12 year to become a neurologist. Hospital that Specializes in the System Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital ● Located in Warrenville, IL ● “...innovative treatments and compassionate care...” Unique Aspects Unique aspects: ● The only system that can think ● Contains the longest cell in the human body (neurons, they are ONE METER long EACH) ● It controls everything in the body, including all other systems of the body Diagram This is the diagram: SOURCES ● Slide 2 Abby https://www.nichd.nih.gov/health/topics/neuro/conditioninfo/Pages/parts.aspx ● ● Slide 4 Ayanna http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Nervous_system https://www.brainpop.com/health/bodysystems/nervoussystem/ ● Slide 5 Ayanna http://www.webmd.com/brain/tc/nervous-system-problems-prevention http://www.cancer. gov/ ● Slide 7 Abby
