Unit 4 DNA & Genetics
Subject: Biology 1H
Approximate Unit Length: 4 Weeks
Unit Developer/Teacher: Susan Wolodkowicz
Curriculum and Assessment Plan
I.
“Know” Assessments: To show this knowledge, the students will be asked
to:
 write the definitions for DNA & RNA, transcription & translation,
autosome, & sex linkage.
 the components of DNA
 the nitrogen bases & their complementary base pairs in DNA & RNA
 functions of tRNA & mRNA
 the laws of segregation & independent assortment
 the terms: dominant, recessive, genotype, phenotype, homozygous,
heterozygous, heredity, genetics, purebred, hybrid, codominant,
incomplete dominance, polygenic, pigment, alleles, fertilization, gene,
gamete, pedigree, mutation, karyotype, homologous, trait, replication
 the different sex-linked disorders
 the different disorders caused by sex chromosome mutations
II.
“Do” Assessments: To show this knowledge, the student will be asked to:
 contrast DNA & RNA
 diagram & describe the steps of DNA replication
 diagram & describe the events that occur during protein synthesis
 given a genotype, the student will determine the phenotype, dominant
& recessive gene, and whether the gene is heterozygous or
homozygous
 name & describe 2 sex-linked disorders
 name & describe 2 disorders caused by mutation of sex chromosomes
 analyze & solve a simple genetics problem, a sex-linked problem & a codominance problem
