Questions
• Genetics
• Genetics is the study of genes, heredity,
and genetic variation in living organisms.
• Write down a list of questions you have
Agenda
• Design a Hybrid animal
Here are some ideas
What is a Gene?
• A gene is a sequence of bases that is the
directions for how to make a specific protein.
• The protein that is made will determine the
trait that the organism has.
What is a Gene?
• Remember: Your DNA is a code that tells your
cells everything they need to know to make
you you!
• If your hair is brown, it’s because your DNA
code is telling your cells to make a specific
protein. That protein makes your hair brown.

How do Cells Make Protein?
• Cells use a type of nucleic acid called RNA to
make protein.
• There are 3 types of RNA:

How do Cells Make Protein?
• The process of making protein is called
Protein Synthesis and it happens in two steps:
1. Transcription (using mRNA)
2. Translation (using tRNA and Ribosomes)

Coding for Amino Acids
• Remember, proteins are made out of long
strings of amino acids, and there are only 20
different amino acids.
