Cell Books!!!!!! Objective: To create a booklet explaining the cell theory, functions of organelles, and cell membrane processes. Materials: Construction/ Typing Paper Yarn or string Markers/ crayons/ colored pencils Procedure: 1. Using blank typing paper, students will make their own illustrations of cellular organelles. The drawings will accurately portray the organelles as closely as possible. 2. The drawings will include labels of key organelle parts. 3. The use of longitudinal, cross-sectional, and exploded view are recommended for variety. 4. Organelle activity and interactions between different organelles will be shown separate from the organelle’s picture. Example: cell membrane function, Golgi apparatus function. 5. The production of a unique cover is encouraged to complete the cell fact file. 6. Create a table of contents: Chapter 1- Cell Models, Chapter 2Organelles, Chapter 3- Cell processes, Chapter 4-cell theory. 7. Once all the pages have been illustrated and explained, the booklet can be assembled. 8. Punch holes at the end of the pages. Make sure that the holes are ALL aligned. 9. Bind them together with yarn or string. 10. Be sure to take pride in your work, as neatness and spelling will count. Your grade will reflect your effort. Grading Rubric -Unique and colored cover with title (1-5 pts) -Table of Contents Page with corresponding page numbers (1-10 pts) -Complete and whole cell drawings of four types of cells (15 pts each) Plant cell Animal cell Prokaryotic cell -Organelles (14 total) Illustrations 5 pts each (total of 70 pts) Drawing is accurate 2 pts Neatness 1 pts Spelling 1 pt Colored 1 pt Definitions of each Organelle- 3 pts each (Total 42 pts) Correct function of organelle 2 pts Spelling and grammar 1 pts Cell Membrane Cell Wall Mitochondrian Chloroplasts Golgi Appapratus - Nucleus - Nucleolus - Lysosome - Ribosomes - Endoplasmic Reticulum - Nuclear Membrane - Cytoplasm - Vacuole - Chromatin - Cell processes: Illustrations (5 pts each) and explanations (3 pts each) total of 56 pts Illustrations 5 pts each Drawing is accurate 2 pts Neatness 1 pts Spelling 1 pt Colored 1 pt Definitions of each Organelle- 3 pts each Correct function of organelle 2 pts Spelling and grammar 1 pt Diffusion Osmosis Active and passive transport Hypertonic, Hypotonic, Isotonic model - Phagocytosis, Pinocytosis - Exocytosis, endocytosis - Cell membrane and Fluid Mocsaic - Define the three parts of the Cell Theory – (15 points) - In addition to all the above information you also need to include the Cell Theory Scientists and how they each contributed to the cell theory. Each scientist – 5 points Spelling of Scientist – 2pts Correct Description of what they did to contribute to the Cell Theory– 3 pts Van Leeuwenhoek Hooke Schleiden Schwann Virchow Brown - On time 12 pts: For every day this project is late, 5% of the grade will be dropped each day. For example, 1 day late, one could the highest grade a student could get would be 95%, 2 days- 90% and so on. During class time, we will be working on this project. Participation is 10 pts per day. If a student is not using their time wisely, their participation grade will be a zero for that day. The point total for this project is 300 points, or about two test grades. Failure to complete this project will seriously affect your ability to earn a passing grade for the quarter.
