What happens in the cell cycle?
p. 73

Interphase
interphase is actually made up of
3 parts
G1 = cell is growing and doing its
normal job
S = DNA and centrioles replicate
G2 = cell is growing and getting
ready to divide
*part of the cell cycle, but not mitosis

Prophase
DNA packs together to form chromosomes
(chromosomes are X shaped)
nuclear membrane disappears or dissolves
centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell
*first step of mitosis

Metaphase
chromosomes line up in the center of the
cell (along the equator of the cell)
spindle fibers attach to the chromosomes at
the centromere
*second step of mitosis

Anaphase
chromatids are pulled apart to opposite
ends of the cell
1/2 of a chromosome is called a chromatid
*third step of mitosis

Telophase
new nuclear membranes form
DNA stretches out
cell membrane and cytoplasm begin to pinch
together
*fourth (final) step of mitosis

Cytokinesis
cell membrane and cytoplasm pinch together
cell completely splits to form two identical
daughter cells
*part of the cell cycle, but not mitosis

Why do cells divide?
to help the body grow
to replace old and dying cells - to keep the
body healthy
What is the purpose of mitosis?
to separate the two copies of DNA so that
both daughter cells have a complete
copy of identical DNA
