Biology Mrs. Zhen Microscope Lab Name: ____________________________ Period: ____________________________ Date: _____________________________ 1. Purpose: To differentiate between animal and plant cells. 2. Research: Learn the name and function of each microscope part and cell organelle 3. Experiment: a) Materials: - microscope, cork slide, empty slide, cover slip, elodea leaf, toothpick, methylene blue b) Procedure: - observe the following slides under the microscope using high power objective (40x) Prepared cork slide Elodea leaf (make your own) Cheek cell + methylene blue (make your own) 4. Data: - Make drawings of the above observation. - Label the name and the total magnification of each drawing - Color the drawings - Label the following cell structures: cytoplasm, nucleus, vacuole, chloroplast, cell wall, cell membrane Name: _______________ Name: _________________ Name: ___________________ Total Mag.: ___________ Total Mag.: _____________ Total Mag: _______________ 5. Analysis and Conclusion: 1) Describe the shapes of the cork cell, Elodea cell, and cheek cell. 2) How are plant and animal cells similar in structure? How are they different? 3) Is the nucleus always found in the center of the cell? 4) Which part of the cell gives shape to an animal cell and a plant cell?
