Seeing Cells Observation & Analysis
Introduction
We know that different types of cells have different structures. But if all living things are
made of cells, why would the cells need to be different? We are going to explore this question
at the cellular level!
Procedure
You will follow the instructional sheets found at your lab station to actually make two slides
during this lab: human epithelium (skin) cells and plant leaf cells. Then you will follow the Stepby-Step instructions for How to Use a Microscope to look at them under low, medium, and high
powers.
For each slide, you will need to complete a scientific drawing under medium or high power.
You will also need to label cell parts and answer questions related to each of the slides.
BE SURE EACH DRAWING HAS A TITLE, POWER OF MAGNIFICATION, and
LABELS!
You will work in pairs to complete this lab, BUT each person is responsible for viewing and
making two detailed drawings of each type of cells on their own paper. You also need to answer
the analysis questions in your own words!
Be sure to follow all directions! Happy exploring!
Plant Leaf Cell
Follow the directions in your lab area
to make a slide of Elodea leaf cells.
Label the cell wall and chloroplasts.
Animal Skin Cell
Follow the directions in your lab area to
make a slide of human skin cells.
Label the cell membrane, and nucleus.

Answer the following questions based on your lab experience.
1. Based on your observations, do all cells have the same shape and size? Explain your answer.
2. Think about the two types of cells you observed: animal and plant cells.
*What is the major difference between the function of a plant’s leaves and animal skin?
*How are these differences in structure between these two types of cells related to their differences
in function?
3. Use a Venn diagram to compare and contrast plant and animal cells. Think about size, shape, and
structure.
