PURPOSE:
MATERIALS:
microscope slide
coverslips
microscope
dropper
microviewer
microviewer packet
Elodea
PROCEDURE:
PART A: “CELLS OF YOUR BODY” – Microviewer
1. Read the introduction and each passage “Cheek Cells” (section 1) as well as
“Nerve Cells” (section 7).
2. Construct a “Cell Facts” data table and list 8 facts from the reading – 4 about
each.
3. Draw slide #1– Cheek cells (below data table). Be sure to follow lab
drawing rules.
4. Draw slide #7—Nerve cells (below data table). Be sure to follow lab
drawing rules.
PART B: PLANT CELLS
1. Carefully tear off a small leaf near the top of an Elodea sprig.
Prepare a wet mount slide of Elodea.
2. View the leaf under low power. Make a lab drawing of what you observe.
Label structures that are visible.
3. Examine the leaf under high power. Find a reasonable sample of several cells
and make a drawing of what you observe. Label structures that are visible.
CONCLUSION: Answer questions 1-6 in Q/A format in complete sentences.
1. What structure(s) were observed in plant cells that were not visible in
animal cells?
2. What structure(s) were observed in both animal and plant cells?
3. Why were some organelles not observed in this lab?
4. Which part of an animal cell gives shape to the cell?
5. Which part of a plant cell gives shape to the cell?
6. Why don’t animals cell have chloroplasts? (Hint: How do animals get
