Cell Parts Analogy Project
Part 1: Choose your analogy
It’s time to get creative! Design an analogy for a cell that includes items analogous of cell structure and
function. The analogy must include enough parts to represent all of the organelles and their functions.
You must also be able to explain why you have chosen each part to represent each organelle. First
choose whether you will represent a plant or an animal cell. Your analogy must include representation
of 14 of the following cell parts:

Part 2: Explain your analogy
Plan out your analogy, then type it in paragraph form. This is a tour of your cell analogy. Start by
explaining what you have chosen to be your cell. Then explain each organelle representation and WHY
you made that item represent that particular organelle. You need to represent at least 14 cell
structures. Be sure to include explanations for all cell parts in this section. In your paragraph, underline
each cell part represented. By the end of the paragraph you should have at least 14 parts underlined.
This paragraph should be attached to the back of your poster.
Example format:
I have chosen [what represents your cell] to represent my cell. [What represents your cell] represents
a(n) plant/animal cell. The [part of your analogy] represents the nucleus because [reason why that part
represents the nucleus]. The [part of your analogy] represents the plasma membrane because [reason
why that part represents the plasma membrane]. …etc…
Part 3: Illustrate your analogy
What fun is a cell analogy if you are just writing about it? Now it’s time to get out your crayons and
illustrate your cell analogy. Draw what represents your cell and all of the parts on/in it. Clearly label
each part, writing the item and the cell part that it represents. You’re drawing on poster paper. Poster
paper will be provided in class, but you may also use your own poster-board if you choose.
Cell Analogy Project:
______ 14 points – all cell parts represented
–
1 point for each cell part; must be underlined
______ 14 points – appropriate explanations given
–
1 point for each explanation
______ 6 points – paragraph format
–
2 points – typed (or neatly written) and in paragraph form
–
2 points – attached to back of cell drawing
–
2 points – your name
______ 16 points – cell analogy drawing
–
2 points – clear title
–
2 points – Is it in poster format?
–
8 points – drawing is clearly labeled with both the analogy and the cell part
Example: “plasma membrane/factory wall”
