Parent Information: Cell Analogy Project
Below is information about our first big project in Science. The project is worth
100 points and is due on ________________________________.
Please have _____________________________________________(student name)
review the requirements for the project and what he/she is planning to do for an
analogy (attached to this sheet).
Objective: To build a better understanding of the parts of a plant or animal cell and their functions.
An analogy is a partial similarity of two or more things that are otherwise essentially different. You
will be drawing a comparison between the parts of a plant or animal cell and their functions with
the parts and functions of something of your choice (i.e. school, kitchen, computer, airport, robot,
garden, sports team, Simpsons, etc.).
Your project must include the following:
Format: a poster (no larger than 18” x 24”) or three dimensional display of your cell analogy.
Content:
 Choose either a plant or animal cell for your analogy.
 You will have an overall analogy (ex: a cell is like a restaurant) (the overall analogy should
be in large print at the top of the poster) and analogies for each of the following cell parts
(more parts are optional).
nucleus
mitochondria
vacuole
endoplasmic reticulum
cytoplasm
cell membrane
lysosome
ribosomes
 Each analogy must include the following:
o A picture of the analogous part (drawn or cut out of magazine)
o A label that identifies the analogy, describes its function, and compares it to a cell
part (ex: the owner/manager directs the restaurant like the nucleus)
 Your name and period should appear clearly on the product.
I have reviewed the requirements for this assignment with my child. I will help my
child at home complete this project by the due date.
