Cell Organelles • A cell is like a factory. It has many machines inside to make it work correctly. • The “machines” in a cell are called organelles • Organelles perform functions to keep a cell healthy and alive. • They are similar to organs which perform functions to keep a body healthy and alive. Nucleus-control center of the cell •Nuclear membrane – outer covering of the nucleus, protects the nucleus • The Nucleus contains chromosomes with DNA. • The DNA determines the cell’s activities. • The DNA determines an organism’s traits. Cell membrane – outer covering of the cell • Jobs of membrane: 1. Protection 2. Selectively Permeable – Controls what goes in and out of cell. Cytoplasm – jelly like liquid that holds all of the organelles Mitochondria Power House” of the cell. • “ • Supplies the cell with ATP energy Ribosome • Produces proteins Vacuole – storage bins Stores water and waste materials Golgi Bodies • “Packing and Shipping” • Pack and ship materials to other parts of the cell Endoplasmic Reticulum “Intracellular Highway” • Transport tubes • Pathway of tubes that carry substances in the cell Plant Cells • Plant cells have 3 parts that animal cells do not. • 1. Cell wall • 2. Chloroplast • 3 Large Central Vacuole Cell Wall • Outer rigid protective layer of a plant cell • The cell wall is outside of the cell membrane Chloroplast • Has chlorophyll • Performs Photosynthesis
