Name__________ Date__________ DNA AND RNA Questions(pg 101-102) 1. What does a DNA molecule look like? DNA looks like a twisted ladder 2. What are the two sides of the DNA molecule made up of? Phosphate and sugar 3. What kind of a sugar makes up a DNA? Deoxyribose 4. What are the rungs of the DNA molecule made up of? Nitrogen bases 5. What are the four nitrogen bases ? Adenine, Thymine ,Cytosine, Guanine, 6. What does adenine (A) pair up with? Thymine 7. What does guanine pair up with? Cytosine 8. What is DNA replication? DNA unzips and the nitrogen bases that are floating in the nucleus pair up with each half of the DNA molecule. One DNA strands becomes two . 9. One section of a strand of a DNA strand has the base sequence AGATTC. What is the base sequence on the other strand? TCTAAG DNA AND RNA Questions(pg 132-133) 10.What is the relationship between gene and DNA? A gene is a section of DNA that contains information to code for a specific protein. It is an active part of DNA 11.What is protein synthesis ? How are proteins made? During protein synthesis , the cell uses the information on a gene located on a chromosome to produce a specific protein. The information from the DNA is copied on to MRNA in the form of three base code in the nucleus, The Mrna then goes to the ribosomes. This message is then translated by the Trna which brings the amino acids to the ribosomes. The amino acids then connect together to make the proteins 12. What are the three differences between DNA and RNA? pg 133 DNA RNA Is double stranded Contains dereoxyribose sugar Contains nitrogen bases ATCG Is single stranded Contains ribose sugar Contains nitrogen bases AUCG 13. What are the three types of RNA? mRNA Copies the message from DNA in the nucleus and contain information in for of three bases(codon) tRNA It translate the message on Mrna and carries the amino acids that correspond to the three bases(codon) Rrna It is the site of protein synthesis 14. Draw the diagram on pg 132-133
