Cell Organelles
1) Complete the following table:
ORGANELLE
Mitochondria
Ribosomes
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Golgi Apparatus
Lysosomes
FUNCTION
-Provide the cells with
energy, by a process called
respiration. Used in whole
function of the cell.
-Proteins are put together
on them using information
from the nucleus and
molecules from the
cytoplasm. Energy needed
for growth, repair,
reproduction.
-Folded membranes that
carry materials through the
cytoplasm. “Rough” (have
ribosomes attached,
“smooth” do not.
-Proteins are stored here.
Also puts proteins into
packages called vesicles,
which carry the protein to
the surface of the cell.
-Patrol the cytoplasm.
Contain special proteins
that break down molecules
and clean up.
FACTORY
COMPARISON
-Generator: provides
energy for the factory
-Assembly line: assembles
raw materials
-Conveyer belt: moves
product within the factory
-Packaging and shipping
-Collection center: Breaks
down and recycles used
parts.
2) What are organelles?
Organelles are specialized structures found in the cytoplasm of a cell.
3) Predict what would happen to a cell if its mitochondria stopped working.
No energy would be available to the cell. Any cell function requiring energy
would be impaired. The cell would die.
4) Explain the two types of endoplasmic reticulum and what they mean.
-Smooth endoplasmic reticulum – a series of folded membranes that carry
materials through the cytoplasm.
-Rough endoplasmic reticulum – has many ribosomes attached
