The Cell Analogy Assignment
Cells are like small communities, with many parts doing specialized jobs to help the whole. A similarity
between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based is called an analogy. Analogies
help you relate something new (the cell organelles) to something that you already know a lot about (like a
city). Here’s a small example: The cell is like a city – the nucleus is like the mayor because he/she controls
the city like the nucleus controls the cell. The ER is like the highway because the highway transports people
in cars like the ER transports proteins in the cell.
You will be creating an analogy as you compare the cell to a place, thing or event and relate at least 8
organelles to parts of your place, thing or event.
1. Decide what your analogy will be… the more creative the better. Pick something you are interested
in!
2. Title – The Cell is Like _______________________
3. Match- Write 8 cell parts and compare them 8 parts of your analogy.
4. Explain how each part is similar to its corresponding organelle.
Use this format:
The (part of analogy) is like the (part of cell) because (function of that part of the analogy) like the (function that part of the cell).
Ex. The mayor is like the nucleus because he/she controls the city like the nucleus controls the cell.
5. Include at least 8 organelles. Use your notes.
