 Answer the following question on the white piece of
paper at your desk…
 What role do the senses play in the nervous system?
The Nervous
System
Today’s objectives…
 Identify and discuss the two main parts of the nervous
system.
 Explain how the nervous system functions as the central
control system of the body.
 Identify factors that may lead to disorders of the nervous
system.

The Nervous
System
The Body’s Control Center
The nervous system carries
messages to and from the brain.
It controls senses, thoughts,
movements and bodily functions.

Neurons
 The cells that make up the nervous system.
 Send and receive information in the form of electrical charges.
 There are 3 types of neurons
 Sensory, Interneurons and Motor
Neurotransmitters
 Seratonin –mood, appetite and
memory.
 Dopamine- pleasure and pain.
 Melatonin- sleep
 Norepinephrine- alertness and
learning.
 Epinephrine- also known as
adrenaline, gets your body up
and moving
 Endorphins- fights pain and
stress, related to exercise, give
you a good feeling.
 Cortisol- stress
 Chemicals that help
transmit signals from
neuron to neuron
Nervous System
Parts
Central Nervous System or
CNS consists of the brain
and the spinal cord.
 Brain is the command
center- controls most body
functions.
Just the Brain Facts!
 Spinal Cord is a long bundle
of neurons that relays
messages btwn CNS and
PNS
Peripheral Nervous System
(PNS)
 means “located away from
the center”
 Nerves that connect CNS to
all parts of the body.
 PNS carries messages to the
CNS.
 Two parts- somatic and
autonomic.
