Agenda Think About It Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic cells Throw Your Hands in the Air Exit Questions KEYSTONE BIOLOGY B Think About It … Compare and contrast newer inventions to the predecessors: Meaning… Compare and contrast the new versions of inventions to the ones that came before. Ex: The first telephone to a smart phone. Objectives By the end of today, SWBAT… Compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells Describe the role of DNA, the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and the nucleus in the cell Why do we care about cells? You are alive Parts of you are alive! Parts of those parts are alive! Where does it end? The cell! The cell is the smallest form of life ALL living organisms are made of cells Human Red Blood Cells White Blood Cell Attacking Bacteria Human Sperm Cell Human Egg Cell What makes them different? Key Point #1: The function of a cell (what it does) is determined by its structure (what it is made of) DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic code that instructs the cell how to run (it’s what makes you “you”) Organelle: Part of a cell Cell membrane The cell membrane is a thin, flexible barrier around the cell It controls what goes in and out of the cell All cells have this Cytoplasm The cytoplasm is everything inside of the cell membrane The cytoplasm contains all the cell organelles All cells have this Nucleus Nucleus holds DNA and controls the cell’s activities The cell’s own minibrain The nucleus has its own special membrane So we have some organelles… To help you remember the function of each, create an analogy in your notes. Compare each cell organelle to a something else. Something you know already. The (cell organelle) is like a (make a comparison) because it ______________________________. What makes them different? Key Point #2: Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have different structures Eukaryotic cells Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus Membrane-bound organelles All multi-celled organisms are eukaryotes So all PLANTS and ANIMALS are eukaryotes Can be single-celled Prokaryotic cells DNA is floating in the cytoplasm Always single-celled organisms Double Bubble (In your notes) Prokaryotic Cell Eukaryotic Cell Quick Recap Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus DNA Eukaryotic? Yes Prokaryotic? Yes Yes Yes Yes, inside of nucleus Yes No Yes, floating in cytoplasm Study Time Take 5 minutes to study your notes. If you realize that you don’t understand what you wrote down… Take notes in your own words! Ask your group members Raise your hand and ask me for help “Throw your hands in the aaaaair” First round Discuss in groups Second round Try on your own ROUND ONE (Groups) Where all cell organelles are found Controls everything that happens in the cell. Prokaryote or Eukaryote? Found on the edge of the cell. Prokaryote or Eukaryote? Everything inside of the cell membrane. This cell is singlecelled, its traits are controlled by DNA, and has a nucleus ROUND TWO (Individual) Missing in prokaryotes. All plants and animals are this type of cell ALL CELLS have these TWO things. Decides what gets to go into the cell, and what has to leave. In eukaryotes, DNA is found here. Prokaryote or Eukaryote? Which of the following is true? 1. 2. 3. 4. What enters/leaves the cell is controlled by “A” The presence of “B” makes this a eukaryotic cell The presence of “B” makes this a prokaryotic cell “C” is found in ALL cells B C A Quiz your partner With the person next to you, use you notes to quiz him/her Be difficult! Ask anything we have learned today Don’t take an answer unless it is perfect What we have learned today is fundamental to everything else we will learn about the cell… so get it right!!! Exit Questions Complete sentences! Don’t talk! 1. Describe the differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. (Include at least two.) 2. Describe what TWO out of these three things do in the cell: cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus
