Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells
Picture Vocabulary
Organisms and Environments
Organism
A living thing able to grow and to reproduce.
Cell
The smallest unit of an organism; it is enclosed
by a membrane and performs life functions.
Eukaryotic Cell
A cell containing a membrane-enclosed nucleus
and organelles.
Prokaryotic Cell
A cell lacking a nucleus or any other
membrane-enclosed organelle.
Cell Membrane/Membrane
A protective layer that surrounds a cell or an
organelle.
Organelle
Nucleus
Structures in cells that perform specific functions;
found in all eukaryotic cells and in some
prokaryotic cells.
Nucleus
A structure found in eukaryotic cells that contains
DNA and is responsible for controlling the
activities of the cell.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic Acid; found in the nucleus;
consists of coded information that controls cell
activities.
