Important info
A. Characteristics of the Cell Membrane
1.
2.
3.
4.
His friends call him the plasma membrane
He is thin and flexible
Surrounds ALL cells
Fluid-Mosaic Model
4. Fluid-Mosaic Model?
a. The cell membrane is NOT a rigid structure
with immovable components!
b. The cell membrane is fluid-like and flexible
c. Within the membrane, molecules can
move around
B. Functions of the Cell Membrane
2 main functions:
1. Protection – protects the cell from the outside environment
2. Regulation – controls what can enter and exit the cell
a. He is selectively permeable: permeate is a
fancy way to say “pass through.”
b. maintains homeostasis
1. homeostasis = state of equilibrium in
the body
What Is the Cell Membrane Made of?
C. Structure
Cell membrane is an organelle made up of biomolecules.
1. Phospholipids make up the majority of the cell membrane
a. Hydrophilic heads (polar) are made of phosphates (Phospho)
b. Hydrophobic tails (nonpolar) made out of fatty acids (Lipid)
Structure
c. To protect the hydroPHOBIC tails from water, they form a bilayer
which keeps the tails inside and the water- loving heads outside.
2. Protein molecules bring materials
into the cell and receive signals
from outside the cell
a. ex: glucose, amino acids, ions, and
water
b. O2 and CO2 can pass through
freely
3. Carbohydrate molecules (attached
to proteins or lipids) have antenna
to help cells identify or recognize
other cells
4. Cholesterol (lipid) that is found in
the fatty acid tails helps the cell
membrane maintain it’s flexible
shape.
