Cell Transport Notes
Cell (Plasma)Membrane- super thin layer
- called cell or plasma membrane
- 2 functions → @ the same time
1. Separates the cell from the outside environment
2. Connects the cell to its surroundings by controlling what enters and
leaves the cells
The Cell Membrane has: two (2) layers (double layer)
- 2 layers (Bi-layer) thick
- made of lipids (FATS) & Proteins → that constantly are
moving
* Called Bi-layer Phospholipids
2 lipids face in
(Doesn’t like water)
Fluid Mosaic Model
(1 lipid face out
(Likes water)
Cell Transport
Selective Permeability – allows some substances to past through the
(semi-permeable)
cell and other substances can’t
(mainly based on size)
-3 Factors
 Some substances dissolve easier in fats
 Size → smaller substances can go thru easier than larger
 Carrier Proteins → are embedded in the cell membrane & they help
more specific mole
