Project- “Sell your Organelle”- Groups of 3
This lesson is designed to help students visualize plant and animal cells, understand the parts of a cell and
their functions, and distinguish plant cells from animal cells. Students will do this by completing a three-fold
task:
 Researching the function of their assigned cell part.
 Drawing and cutting out their assigned cell part.
 Presenting their information to the class and placing their cell part on the classroom animal and plant
cells.
 Explain to the class/teacher why your organelle is the most important to the cell.
 Chose one other organelle that you “work well with” and explain your relationship.
Materials:
 2 areas on the white board (1 for the plant cell and 1 for the animal cell)
 White paper, markers, scissors for drawings
 Tape to place organelle within the cell
Procedure:
Each group will be assigned a cell part(s). Each group will find the following information about their cell part.
 Determine whether the cell part(s) belong to a plant cell, an animal cell, or both types of cells.
 Write the function(s) of the cell part(s), including why your organelle is the most important.
 Chose one other organelle your organelle works with and explain how you are related/good work
partners.
 Draw and cut picture(s) of your cell part for both the plant and animal cell (if both contain). If the cell is
equipped with more than one of y our cell parts, then you need to draw and cut out the appropriate
number of cell parts for each cell. Be sure to notice the size of our plant and animal cells. Make sure
that your cell part is the appropriate size.
Presentation:
Each group will present their cell part(s) to the class. Remember to “ Sell your Organelle”. Include a catchy
slogan, memorable phrase, etc. Each member of the group must participate in the presentation. During the
presentation, explain the information your group researched then place your cell part(s) on the white board in
the appropriate place for both the plant and animal cell. Then explain what other organelle you support and
why.
You will be assigned one of the following cell parts:


Cytoplasm
Cell Membrane
Nucleus
Nucleolus
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Ribosomes

Grading:
15 points: Clear, concise, creative and convincing (Your organelle will not be fired.). Excellent Oral
Presentation and Timing. Well-prepared, good teamwork, excellent slogan, explained how the
organelle works with another organelle. Used class time well.
12 points: Same as above, yet not all group members involved equally. Could have used class time more
efficiently.
10 points: Not all members involved equally, somewhat confusing, not completely convinced of importance of
organelle importance.
8 points: Not all members involved equally, confusing, not completely convinced of importance of organelle.
Disorganized oral presentation. No slogan, Lacking creativity. Didn’t make use of class time.
5 points: Oral presentation done by one person only, wrong information. No creativeness, or catchy slogan.
Disorganized. Organelle will be fired. Wasted time during class.
