DNA Extraction Activity (2 points)
You will need Flash Player to run this simulation. Go to http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/labs/extraction/
Click on the “Start Lab” to begin. There are sound effects with this simulation, so if you’re in a lab, use headphones.
1. What are some reasons that scientists may need DNA samples?
2. The activity simulates extracting DNA from cheek cells. You will add some lysis solution to the cells.
a. What does “lysis” mean?
b. What are the ingredients of the lysis solution?
c. What do each of the ingredients do?
3. Next, you will separate DNA from proteins and cell fragments.
a. What is the purpose of adding salt solution?
b. What was the purpose of centrifuging the solution?
c. What was the purpose of adding alcohol to the solution?
At the end of the activity, click on the link for “How to extract DNA from anything living.”
(http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/labs/extraction/howto/). Summarize below the steps for extracting DNA from
peas.
What is the purpose of adding each of these?
a. Detergent
b. Meat tenderizer
c. Alcohol
Another 3 points if you follow the procedures to extract DNA from something (onions, strawberries, kiwi, and
wheat germ ground up in a blender all work well) and bring in your extracted DNA!
