Grade 7 Spelling List 7 April 7-8, 2011 Test on April 13-14, 2011 Science1. Photosynthesis- process by which plants and other autotrophs capture and use light energy to make food from carbon dioxide and water 2. Autotroph- an organism that is able to capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own food 3. Heterotroph- organism that cannot make its own food and gets food by consuming other living things 4. Chlorophyll- green photosynthetic pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, algae, and some bacteria 5. Cellular respiration- process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen 6. Fermentation- process by which cells release energy by breaking down food molecules without using oxygen 7. Interphase- first stage of the cell cycle that takes place before cell division occurs, during which a cell grows and makes a copy of its DNA 8. Chromosome- threadlike structure within a cell’s nucleus that contains DNA that is passes from one generation to the next 9. Mitosis- second stage of the cell cycle during which the cell’s nucleus divides into two new nuclei and one set of DNA is distributed into each daughter cell 10. Cytokinesis- final stage of the cell cycle, where the cell’s cytoplasm divides, distributing the organelles into each of the two new daughter cells
