Cell Analogy
Introduction:
An analogy compares two different things to better explain one. You will create
analogies to better explain how the parts of the cell work together to help the cell survive.
The organelles of the cell work together for the cell to do all of its daily jobs. For
example, the nucleus tells the cell membrane what materials are needed; the cell
membrane lets them in; these materials may go to the ribosomes where they are used to
make proteins and are then are finished by the endoplasmic reticulum and packaged by
the Golgi body to be sent where they are needed in the cell.
The Task:
In this project, you get to be creative. You and your partner will work together to draw a
poster that describes a cell as though it were some place people would go to such as an
amusement park (like Disneyland or Elitch’s), museum, library, store, school or other
similar places. Chose parts of that place that do the same or similar jobs as the parts of
the cell. Describe the parts of the cell as the things one will see in this place. It is most
important that your analogies (comparisons) make sense and relate to the real
structure and job of the cell organelle you are describing. An example would be if I
describe the cell as a factory, I might describe the membrane as a security fence with.
You will be graded on your creativity as well as correct descriptions and comparisions.
Your poster must include:
1. Written descriptions and pictures.
2. Descriptive analogies of the organelles. Include the cell membrane, ribosomes,
endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi body, nucleus, vacuole, lysosome and
mitochondria. Each organelle’s job must be included in your description.
3. For your comparisons, use the following format:
The cell membrane is like ______ because the cell membrane does ______ and
the _______ does __________.
4. Your drawing must be one large picture, not many small separate pictures.
5. Both authors and the parts they did (this is how I will give you your grade.)
Grade
1. Correct descriptions of organelles and their jobs with the job of the object is it
compared to: 15 points
2. Organelles are compared to objects that actually do similar jobs: 15 points
3. Design – poster is neat and colorful: 5 points
4. Creativity: 5 points
5. Complete sentences: 5 points
TOTAL: 45 points
