PLANT CELLS • Plant cells have almost the same organelles as the other Eukaryotic cells… • But they have a few extra things added! Use the drawing to help you recognize what we are talking about. Cell Wall -Plants cells are covered by a rigid, stiff cell wall that is outer part of the cell. - The cell wall surrounds the cell membrane of the plant cell Cell membrane (red) Cell Wall (green) This stiffness allows the plant to grow up towards the sun and not fall over. Cell walls are made up of long chains of cellulose. There are two types of cell walls: - Primary cell wall expands and develop as the plant is growing - Secondary cell wall outside the primary cell wall and the cell membrane. Cell membrane Secondary Cell Wall Primary Cell Wall Color the Cell Walls (gray) and the Cell Membrane (pink) in your labeling. Cell Wall Cell Membrane VACUOLES -We said a vacuole is a fluid filled organelles that store water, wastes, and sometimes enzymes. - There usually is 1 large vacuole in plant cells. Plants have larger vacuoles because they may not always get water…so they have to store it and slowly use it. - The plants absorb as much water as they can, pushing all the rest of the organelles to the edge of the cell wall. For now, just color the Vacuole (Blue) for water Vacuole PLASTIDS -A double membrane organelle (green in color) that absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis -It is the site of photosynthesis in plant cells -The most familiar one is called a CHLOROPLAST Chloroplasts contain round poker-like green chips called THYLAKOIDS -The actual conversion of sunlight to chemical energy occurs in the Thylakoids They are green colored because they are filled with Chlorophyll Chloroplast Thylakoids So what are the differences between Plant & Animal Cells?
