How are these cells well adapted to help them carry
out their function?
Nerve cell
Sperm cell
(these are not to scale)
The nerve cell is long and thin so that it can carry
messages to different parts of the body.
The sperm cell has to be able to move through the
uterus and oviduct to fertilise the egg

Are these plant or animal cells?
cell walls
vacuoles
chloroplasts
This is a leaf cell
This is a root hair cell
How do their shape and contents help them to
carry out their function?

How do cells grow and make copies of themselves?
1 The nucleus copies itself
2 The nuclei move to opposite ends of the
cell and the cell starts to pinch in the middle
3 The cell prepares to divide
4 Two new cells are produced which are
identical to the first cell

A group of identical cells are called TISSUE.
Tissue cultures can be grown from single cells
How might doctors be able to make use of
tissue cultures?

Growing tissue for a useful purpose.
Step 1 make a mesh in
the shape of a human ear
Step 2 grow mouse cells
as the mesh dissolves
Step 3 transplant the
ear onto a mouse
Step 4 transfer the idea
to human beings?

Light is
absorbed
by
chloroplasts
in this plant
cell so
that food
can be
made
How is this cell designed
for photosynthesis?
•The cell is packed
with chloroplasts.
•The tall shape means
there is a good chance
of light hitting a
chloroplast before
reaching the bottom
of the cell.
Look at this
leaf cell!!

Minerals are taken in by the root hair
How is this plant cell well designed?
•the cells grow into long hairs
which stick out into the soil
To the xylem
which carries
the minerals
and water
to the leaves
minerals
Look at this
•This gives a large surface
area for absorbing water and root hair
cell!!
minerals from the soil

How is this sperm
cell going to reach
the egg????????

Instructions for E-SPLATT
The idea of this series of six questions is that they can be used as a
plenary at the end of each section of the work on cells. The question is
asked and the answers appear. After the answers have finished moving
they will eventually come to rest in the eight boxes which are labelled
A-H. The winner is the first pupil to identify the correct letter each
time. The winner can be determined in a number of ways.
1. The first person to shout out the correct letter.
2. The first person to put their hand up and give the correct answer.
3. The first person to hold up the correct letter from their cards.
With this third option pupils could be given a printed copy of the work
sheet which they can cut up before spreading the eight letters in front
of them on the desk.
The final way you could play the game just uses two sets of letters.
Two pupils are chosen to play with the winner staying on and the loser
passes their cards on to the next pupil who becomes the new challenger.
The winner is the pupil who wins the final question.
