Protein Functions
Proteins are essential for building up body tissues - including muscles!
Enzymes are proteins that facilitate reactions in our cells. They are often referred to
as catalysts because they speed up chemical reactions. For example, the enzyme
pepsin in our stomach speeds up the digestion of our food.
Transport proteins are carrier proteins which move molecules from one place to
another around the body. One important example is hemoglobin protein, which
moves oxygen around the blood.
Some proteins are responsible for movement. Examples include actin and myosin.
These proteins are involved in muscle contraction and movement.
Some proteins provide support to our cells. One example of a structural protein is keratin,
which provides the protective structures of our hair and nails.
Some proteins are messenger proteins which help to signal and coordinate certain
bodily activities. These proteins are usually hormones, and one important example is
insulin. Insulin sends signals to control blood-sugar concentration.
Antibodies are proteins that can recognize foreign invaders and bind to them so that other
cells can com attack the foreign invaders.
