Class: _8th Grade General___
Function Of The Organelle
A semi-permeable organelle that lets nutrients
and water into the cell and keeps waste out.
Holds the cytoplasm inside the cell. (Semi-

to the Whole Cell
Security Gate
permeable- only allows some things in)
Helps to maintain homeostasis by
regulating what is allowed to enter the
cell, keeping harmful things out and
removing waste products.
Helps to maintain homeostasis by
directing all activities within the cell.
(Like the teacher in the classroom)
Nucleus
Both
Holds and protects DNA- the material
that has all the instructions for the cell
and the body. Like the control center
for the cell
Manager
Mitochondria
Both
Convert Oxygen into energy for the cell. (The
reason you breath in oxygen is so the
mitochondria in your cells can use it!) The
energy molecule made by the mitochondria is
called ATP
Power Generator
Without the mitochondria the cell
would not have energy for any of its
other functions and would be unable
to maintain homeostasis.
Cytoplasm
Both
The air in the factory
Ribosome
Both
Jelly-like substance inside the cell
surrounding the organelles. Gives the
cell organization and holds nutrients
needed for the organelles to function.
Synthesize (make) proteins that are
used for the other organelles and the
rest of the body.
Vacuole
Both
Hold water and nutrients for the cells. They
play a more important role in plant than
animal cells. In plant cells, when they are full,
they make the plants strong and rigid. Animal
cells have many small vacuoles while plants
have 1 or 2 large vacuoles.
Storage Containers/
Water cooler
Without cytoplasm in the cell the
organelles would not have
organization and support and
organelles would lack nutrients.
Without ribosomes the cell could not
maintain homeostasis because it
would not have the proteins needed
to build all the other organelles!
All cells need liquid within them to
survive. For example, liquid is
needed to make the cytoplasm. The
vacuole stores this water and releases
it when the cell needs it.
Plant Cell- 1 or 2,
Large and central
Animal cell- Many,
very small
Cell Wall
Plant Only
Gives the plant cell protection and
support. Also holds in the pressure
produced when the vacuoles are full.
Chloroplast
Plant Only
This organelle contains a chemical called
chlorophyll (it is green and makes the plant
green!) This chemical allows the plant to
combine sunlight and carbon dioxide and turn
it into energy. This is known as photosynthesis.

Outside Walls
The cell wall helps the plant cell maintain
homeostasis by protecting the organelles
from outdoor elements as well as holding in
the pressure from the water in the vacuoles.
Cafeteria
The food (sugars) made by the chloroplast
are used as fuel for the mitochondria to turn
into energy. Without the chloroplast the
plant cell would have no nutrients and would
not be able to remain in homeostasis.
This process is how the plant makes its own
food!
