This explore is best when the students can use computers but can be done
globally if necessary.
When open, the DNA molecule will appear like this.
Students should use the control panel to explore the structure of DNA.
The various controls when clicked highlight parts of the DNA molecule or
move it into different positions. The students can also use the mouse to grab
the DNA to move it to see its structure. The color legend is given when you
“click for explanation” under C H O N P. For example, clicking “Backbone”
does this:
Students should view pages 1 and 3, skipping 2 and 4 unless the teacher
wishes them to view this also. (2 is replication & transcription: 4 is 3’; 5’
ends) Forward arrow on the controls moves to the next page. Questions the
students need to answer are on the next page. You could also have them
answer in their journals.
Student________________________ Period ______Date__________
1. What do you notice about the structure of the DNA molecule as you
rotate it and view it from different angles?
2. What does the “Backbone” consist of? What atoms is it made of?
3. What holds the 2 sides of the DNA molecule together in the center?
4. Why would having a coiled structure be important for the DNA?
5. What are the bases in the center made of? What atoms?
6. When you click the “DNA -> AT” button, between which atoms are
the bonds forming?
7. On page 3, as you click off and click on the various parts of the DNA
structure, what did that show you about the DNA molecule?
8. Draw the DNA molecule and label its parts.
