The Incredible Cell Analogy Project
Cells need to carry on the same basic functions as we do to sustain life; the difference is cells do this
with much smaller parts. These smaller structures that allow the cell to function are called organelles –
“tiny organs.” Also plant and animal cells have some similar parts and some parts that are not similar.
It’s only common sense that if you are able to relate things you learned in class to everyday things, you’ll remember
it better. It’s not every day that you and your friends sit around at Starbucks discussing the endoplasmic reticulum.
However, you probably do discuss things like cars, your homes, places to visit, etc… Therefore, your task in this
assignment is to relate the different cell organelles to an everyday situation or thing using an analogy.
Your Task
You will come up with an analogy/analogies for the cell of your choice and its organelles. Your analogy will be
represented in the form of a poster or 3-D model that represents a cell and its organelles. You should compare the
roles of the cell organelles to the analogy that you come up with.
Each poster/model must include the following organelles:
• Cell wall (if plant cell)
• Cell membrane
• Nucleus (w/ nucleolus & chromosomes)
• Cytoplasm
• Endoplasmic Reticulum
• Golgi Bodies
• Ribosomes
• Mitochondria
• Vacuoles
• Lysosomes (if animal cell)
• Chloroplasts (if plant cell)
Grades will be based on the following questions:
Is your name on the front of the project?
Is the cell type identified? Tell if it is a plant or animal cell.
Does the model/poster represent an analogy for a plant or animal cell?
Are all the organelles included? (10 for plants cells, 9 for animal cells)
Are the analogy parts labeled correctly? Each “organelle” must be labeled with its name, function, and two to
three sentences about how each item represents the organelle.
Ex: Nucleus- the control center of the cell. The principal of Goldenview represents the nucleus of the
cell. This is because she directs all the activity of the school, just as a cell directs all the activities of a cell.
Are the relationships between the parts (if any) shown correctly? Are the ribosomes on the endoplasmic
reticulum? Is the endoplasmic reticulum near the nucleus? If a plant cell, are the chloroplasts around the
vacuole?
Are the materials acceptable? If you make a model, it CANNOT be made out of materials that will spoil!
