Please do that now. • We are going to discuss, learn, and look at topic sentences today, including our own. John Scieszka • Remember reading The True Story of the Three Little Pigs? • Let’s look at page 5 of that book again. Listen as I read it aloud. • What did John Scieszka do to get us interested in the story right away? More Opening Sentences • Let’s take a look at more opening sentences from Meteor! (Pg. 3) and Water Dance (pg. 3). • Strong opening sentences often intrigue the reader with interesting details (“a star sputtered and flashed and started to fall”) or riddles (“Some people say I am one thing. Others say I am many”). • Strong opening sentences often hint at what is coming in the piece. Think Pair Share • Reread your opening sentence. – Think about your sentence. How might you revise your opening sentences to “hook” your reader and make him want to keep reading? – Turn and talk about your sentence and your ideas with your partner. Each partner will have one minute. Writing Time • During writing time today I want you to revise your opening sentence. Make it something that hooks the reader in and makes them want to continue writing. • Make any other revisions you think are needed to make your piece the most interesting it can be. Tomorrow you will start writing a final version of your draft, so use your time wisely. Share • Who would like to share their opening sentences? – First read the original, and then read the revised sentence. 11:25 – 11:30 Begin Math Test! 11:30 – 12:00 Out of Classroom! • 12:00 – 12:45 Activity • 12:45 – 1:15 Lunch • 1:15 – 1:45 Recess Finish Math Test! 1:45 – 2:45 SCIENCE TIME 2:45 – 3:10 Parts of a Cell (organelles) Class Verbal Quiz What is the function of chloroplast? Chloroplasts are the food producers of the cell. They are only found in plant cells. Chloroplasts are GREEN. Animal cells do not have chloroplasts. What is the function of mitochondria? Mitochondria are the cell's power producers. They convert energy into forms that are usable by the cell. What is the function of cytoplasm? The cytoplasm's function is to simply offer support to the cell. It allows the cell to take up 3-dimensional space and the cell's many organelles to 'float' freely throughout. The cytoplasm is a liquid in which the organelles float in. What is the function of a cell wall? The cell wall is the rigid layer surrounding the plasma membrane of PLANT CELLS. The function of the cell wall is to provide protection and structural support to the cells. It also acts as a filtering device and regulates movement of water, nutrients and waste into and out of the cell. What is the function of the cell membrane? The cell membrane separates the cell from its surroundings. It protects it from changes in the chemical and physical environment, and it regulates the traffic of molecules into and out of the cell. What is the function of chromosomes? Chromosomes are long pieces of DNA found in the center (nucleus) of cells. Chromosomes and associated proteins carry portions of the hereditary information of an organism. Chromosomes are considered the building blocks of the human body. What is the function of the nucleus? The nucleus regulates all cell activity. What is the function of the vacuole? Vacuoles are storage bubbles found in cells. Vacuoles might store food or any variety of nutrients a cell might need to survive. They also store waste products so the rest of the cell is protected from contamination. Eventually, those waste products are sent out of the cell.
