Cell Organelle Flashcard Function/Definitions Cell Wall: provides protection, shape & support for plant cells. Gives plants rigid structure. Cell Membrane: Flexible cover around cell that controls movement of materials in & out of cell. Separates and protects cell from outside. environment. Cytoplasm: Thick watery fluid inside the cell that contains the organelles. Ribosome: Place where proteins are synthesized (made/built). Either free floating or attached to ER. Nucleus: Control center of cell. Holds genetic information called DNA. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid): Genetic material found in nucleus. Also called chromosomes. Endoplasmic Reticulum: Assists in production, processing and transport of proteins and the production of lipids (fats). Rough ER Smooth ER Mitochondria: Power house of cell. Uses oxygen to break down sugar to release energy (ATP) in a process called cellular respiration. Happens in plant & animal cells. Chloroplasts: Absorbs light energy, water & carbon dioxide to make glucose (sugar) & oxygen in a process called photosynthesis. Found in plant cells (not animal). Vesicle: small sac that surrounds material to be moved in or out of the cell. Golgi complex: Modifies, sorts & ships molecules that are made in the ER. Post office of the cell. Lysosome: Responsible for digestion in the cell. Destroys worn-out organelles. Large Central Vacuole: Found in plant cells. Stores water, food & waste materials. Centriole: Found in animal cells. Helps separate chromosomes during cell division. Animal Cell Plant Cell
