Cell Parts and Their Functions… Using analogies to help us remember Lysosome Typical Plant Cell Cell Wall Vacuole Mitochondria Chloroplast Cytoplasm Golgi Apparatus Ribosomes Cell Membrane Nucleus ER Nucleus/Brain • The nucleus of a cell is like the brain of an animal. It is the control center. Cell Membrane/Toll Booth • The cell membrane lets certain materials pass in/out of a cell just as a toll booth monitors vehicles moving through. Cytoplasm/Jelly • Cytoplasm is a jellylike substance that is between the cell membrane and nucleus. It allows materials and organelles to move around the cell. The consistency is like that of jelly. Lysosome/Garbage truck • Garbage trucks collect garbage just as lysosomes get rid of wastes. Vacuole/Storage Tank • The vacuole stores water, food, waste for cell use at a later time just like a storage tank holds materials. Cell Wall/Brick Wall • The cell wall protects and supports the plant cell as a brick wall does in a house. Mitochondria/Power Plant • Mitochondria is where cellular respiration takes place, thus converting resources (O2 + glucose) to energy. A nuclear power plant produces electricity by using radioactive elements. Chloroplast/Solar Power Plant • Chloroplast trap sunlight and convert it to useable energy (CO2+H2O+ sunlight glucose) as a solar panel collects light energy and converts it to electricity. Ribosomes/Assembly Line • Ribosomes are like an assembly line where proteins are put together. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)/Highway • The ER is a transportation network as is a highway for people. Golgi Apparatus/Post Office • The Golgi Apparatus sorts, packages, and distributes materials within the cell as a post office does for mail.
