Automated Gene Synthesis
Machines
By Austin Burgess
What is a Gene
• A gene is a unit of heredity that is transferred
from a parent to its offspring and is held to
determine some characteristics of the,
“Proteins coded directly by genes”
What They Do
• The genes, also known as oligonucleotides ,
took twenty years to make a automated gene
synthesis machine.
• They make oligonucleotides of high quality, to
do a broad range of applications. Like the
MerMade 192E pictured on the first slide.
What is Gene Therapy
• Gene therapy is correcting genes responsible
for disease development.
• The most common form of gene therapy is
placing a gene in a nonspecific location within
the genome to replace a nonfunctioning gene.
The Risks of Gene Therapy
• It can cause your immune system to attack the
virus inserted causing organ failure and
inflammation.
• The virus may spread through more than one
cell causing mutated cells and missing genes.
• Finally it may introduce a tumor if they are
inserted into the wrong spot in the genome, it
could lead to a tumor.
How it Helps Gene Therapy
• It synthesizes DNA into column format using
standard or modified chemistries.
• It takes about three hours to synthesize the
DNA into its column format.
• They can now use them to program what the
gene’s function should be through a gene
synthesizer.
