Cells Name:______________________ Question: How do plant and animal cells differ? Hypothesis: If we study a plant cell and an animal cell, then we will see that they are different from each other because______ _________________________________________________ Materials: light microscope, 2 glass slides, 2 coverslips, dropper, Methylene Blue, toothpick, onion slice, water Procedure: Day One---Plant Cell 1. Study the data table. 2. Use the dropper to put a drop of water on the slide. 3. Peel a thin layer of onion and place it as smoothly as you can in the drop of water. 4. Raise your hand so Mrs. Crumbaker can add a drop of Methylene Blue. 5. Cover with coverslip. View under low power and then high power. 6. Locate the cell wall, nucleus, cell membrane and cytoplasm. Look for chloroplasts. Fill in data table. 7. Draw and label the cell and its parts. Day Two---Animal Cell 1. Using the dropper, add a drop of water to your slide. 2. Mrs. Crumbaker will give a toothpick to a group member. That member will gently rub the inside of his/her cheek with the toothpick and then swirl it in the water drop. 3. Raise your hand so that Mrs. Crumbaker can add a drop of Methylene Blue. 4. Cover with coverslip. View under low and then high power. 5. Locate the nucleus, cytoplasm and cell membrane. Fill in the data table. 6. Draw and label the cell and its parts. Data Table Drawings Onion Cheek Conclusions 1. Describe the shape of a cheek cell.__________________ 2. Describe the shape of an onion cell.__________________ 3. What parts did you see in both cells?_________________ _____________________________________________ 4. What parts are founds in plant cells that are not found in animal cells?___________________________________ 5. Why did we use Methylene Blue?_________________ 6. Which part of the animal cell gives it its shape? _____________________________________________ 7. Which part of the plant cell gives it its shape? _____________________________________________ 8. Was your hypothesis correct? Explain._______________ _______________________________________________
